50th Over
MATCH RESULT: Sri Lanka 238 (Chandimal 75*, Sangakkara 64*, Christian 5/31, Pattinson 4/51) df Australia 229 (D. Hussey 74, Watson 65, Malinga 4/49, Kulasekara 2/38) by 9 runs. Points: SLA 4, AUS 0. MOM: Dinesh Chandimal (SLA).
So the best-of-three final series begins on Sunday at the Gabba in Brisbane with these two sides set to do battle again before heading to Adelaide for games two and three (if required). Please join us then. So long from the MCG!
Dinesh Chandimal was named Man of the Match for his 75 runs which helped get Sri Lanka to a total they would ultimately defend.
It was left to Hussey to try and win it off his own bat but he held out to Tillakaratne Dilshan at long off to spark scenes of utter jubilation from the Sri Lankan players and the fans in the terraces.
But David Hussey refused to give up, and with support from Xavier Doherty got Australia to within 13 runs before Malinga deceived Doherty with a terrific slower ball.
And the wickets kept coming, Clint McKay's dismissal with the score on 187 left Australia with 52 to get with two wickets in hand.
But when he was dismissed by a cracking Lasith Malinga yorker with the score on 140, the Sri Lankans were clear favourites.
They claimed three early wickets before a Shane Watson led revival got Australia back into the match. He combined with Mike Hussey for an 87 run fourth wicket stand to keep Australia's hopes alive.
A thrilling end to this match, with the Sri Lankans getting up by 9 runs with 5 balls to spare to claim a spot in the final series beginning Sunday in Brisbane.
